CCCR of NC to Expand Activities

The state organization of residents of continuing care communities has come a long way from its origins in 1988. The number of homes represented has grown from 8 to 35. The present membership exceeds 3500 and is growing each year. Our annual meeting last year saw in excess of 300 people travel to Greensboro .  Because none of our homes can provide a meeting room large enough, last years’ meeting was held in the Christ United Methodist Church .

All of this has happened because of a small group in 1988 decided that Continuing Care Communities were a unique living arrangement that were not adequately protected by existing state law.  The leader of this group was Mr. Harry E. Groves, a retired Dean of the University of North Carolina Law School and winner of a Ford Foundation Fellowship to Harvard University .  Mr. Groves, an African-American native of Colorado and the holder of numerous awards for scholastic achievements was the principal author of what is now Chapter 64 of the North Carolina General Statutes. The statute provides that each resident of a continuing care community shall be provided with a Disclosure Statement which has been approved by the Commissioner of Insurance together with a residency agreement describing the rights and privileges of the resident. The law also provides for operating reserves and methods by which the Commissioner can intercede in event of financial distress of any given community

This statute, which has been amended many times in the passing years, provides the basic protection of residents and supervision of administrative organizations which have been licensed by the Commissioner of Insurance to operate continuing care facilities.

There are now 51 Continuing Care facilities in the state and we expect more of these will join us during the current year.

During the year preceding last year’s meeting, a Strategic Planning Task Force met on several occasions and recommended to the Board of Directors that the state be divided into three regions, each with its own officers. This plan has been implemented and the initial organizational meetings have been held in each region.  The February – April issue of the Hotline  describes the activities that have taken place  so far at the Regional level.

The Eastern Region has selected Robert Wyatt of Belle Meade as its Representative, Jin Pope of Carolina Meadows as Alternate Representative, Al Duprey of St. Joseph’s Villas as recording secretary and Gloria Wyatt of Belle Meade as secretary .

The Central Region has chosen Past CCCRof NC President Don Hasty of Piedmont Crossing as its Coordinator with Ted Blount of Arbor Acres as their Representative to the Executive Committee. Treasurer Sterling Whitener of Friends Home West is planning the next meeting on April 13th.

In the Western Region, Dick Nielson of Covenant Village has been chosen Representative. Roger Canon of Grace Ridge is on the Executive Committee, Edna Lewis of Abernathy Laurels is Treasurer and Betty Erwin is the Alternate Representative. They will hold their next meeting at Deerfield in Asheville on April 14th.
